Nose is an important part of your body which captures attention very fast due to its centralized and protruding position in the face. Some noses may be too small or too large or may be badly shaped due to a deviated or crooked septum at the time of birth itself. Shape of your nose may get disfigured due to the trauma in an accident. Rhinoplasty is the surgical procedure carried out to restore the shape and position of the nose. Through rhinoplasty one can change the nose smaller or larger, change the angle of the nose, correct the indentations and bumps and alter the tip of the nose. Rhinoplasty is also carried out to correct structural problems in the nose which may lead to congestion and breathing problems.
This surgery is usually done by surgeons who have special training in plastic surgery or otolaryngology. The incisions for rhinoplasty are made inside the nose so that they remain undetectable after the surgery is over. This surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Sometimes overnight stay in the hospital may be necessitated.
During this surgery some bone and cartilage will be removed depending upon the desired results. If necessary some tissue will be added from other part of the body or synthetic filler will be used for this purpose.
After rearranging the tissues and cartilages in the desired shape and position, the surgeon re drapes the skin and tissues over the structure and a splint is attached outside the nose to support the new structure till it heals. After one week the splint and the bandage will be removed. The area around your eyes and nose will be swollen and your face will feel puffy for several days. Cold compresses and pain medications will be helpful to reduce the swelling and pain which may continue for 10 to 14 days. You are required to keep your head steady and free from strenuous activities during this period.
The visible results of rhinoplasty may be small or significant. It is always better that you have a detailed discussion with your otolaryngologist and have a practical and clear idea of your requirements and the achievements that can be obtained through the surgery
